Ghosts – Dolly Alderton – Review (and Christmas wrap up) (no spoilers)
(Read/audio read with @l.aurareads)
I knew I would thoroughly enjoy this book, that’s sort of why I read it. Dolly writes superbly well, and just GETS how friendships and dating works.
It’s so blatantly obvious in her writing. I think it’s special to be able to write about ghosts in the form of her father daughter relationship, watching him not know who she is.. to the ghosts of online dating, what we do as women (I know it happens for guys too, but as a woman, I found it relatable).
It broke my heart to read the scenes of her watching her lose her dad’s relationship. But it also warmed it when I watched her bring her friends up in morale, and be the best sort of friend you’d want to have as a woman.
That’s what’s quite remarkable about this one. She nails the two part concept, but she actually also creates a character who’s so self critical and unsure at times.. but that actually as you watch her, she is extraordinary, as a friend, daughter and overall human.
The only reason I took off a star, was that there was one very small scene, that just didn’t seem real at all. No spoilers, but it just didn’t seem like that would have happened. Aaaaand for me, the ending didn’t seem oomph-y enough, considering she had mic dropped on every chapter.
But overall, a wonderful lit experience, thank dolly 😇
Ps – Im taking a bit of a break over xmas I think.. back soon, stay safe 🎄🥰
